Where is the best place to buy a domain?
Main Post:
Hi, im working for 20 years actively in webdev and hosted and created a dozen of websites, but for last 4 years i switched almost completely to gamedev and jobs where i dont need to buy anything, just to create, so i lost a "touch" what websites are the best to buy domain/servers for hosting some not to complicated websites/apps, and i know that a lot of that changed in recent years.
Right now i have a lot of older websites/apps and domains hosted on hostgator and half of domains are long ago purchased on godaddy. What is the current trend and maybe the best one? Amazon? What is the best choice for buying domain? What is the best choice to buy hosting for php, what for nodejs or newer frameworks? Thanks!
Top Comment: I can vouch for porkbun. Under any circumstances do not ever, even for one second consider godaddy. They are the scum of the earth and deserve bankruptcy.
What is the best place to buy a Domain?

What exactly is a domain?
Main Post:
Hey guys.
I looked in a lot of places but I'm confused... Title.
I thought that the "domain" was just a server that lets you create and store a name/link with the desired extension that would prevent other people from using it. But then there's services, etc. If I use a site builder, like Wix, what else would I have with a service? I take it, just matters related to domain transfers and such...
Also, does it matter where I buy it? I hear Cloudflare and google is good but godaddy isn't. Why?
Thanks!!
Top Comment: The domain itself is the web address. The thing you were thinking of is the DNS server, which is a server that translates domain names to their actual IP address. I personally use Hover for my domains, but Google should be good. Also, avoid GoDaddy like the plague. Before buying a domain, the safest way to look them up is by looking at the ICANN registry directly instead of checking if one is available at the registrar because some will snipe them if you don't buy immediately.
Best place to buy a domain name ?
Main Post:
I found a LOT of them, with very different prices, and I wonder what's the difference ?
Only thing I saw is people complaining about GoDaddy, and saying Cloudlfare and Google domains were good, but google domains is now square space and when I went on Cloudflare website it was saying something about GoDaddy so I wondered if they didn't buy it ?
So what's the best solution ?
If possible I would like something with automatic renewal so i don't lose it if I forget it, and something to remind be before it expires.
Top Comment: search this sub but definitely not godaddy
What's the best domain registrar in 2024?
Main Post:
In the past, I always bought my domains from Google Domains. However, seeing as they were sold to Squarespace, I recently found myself in need of a replacement. I did a bit of looking around and figured that I would share what I learned in case it's helpful to anyone else.
Best domain registrars
There were a few registrars that kept showing up more often than any others. They usually had glowing reviews, and few to no complaints. Here they are in approximate order of how commonly they were recommended:
One catch with Cloudflare is that you are locked into using their DNS.
Dishonorable mention
Most people recommended avoiding GoDaddy due to poor customer service and scummy business practices such as price hikes and buying up domains that people search for.
Final thoughts
Instead of looking on a registrar, you can use ICANN Lookup to check domain availability.
Feel free to share your experiences with these registrars or add any options I may have missed in the comments.
Farewell, Google Domains :(
Edit: Removed Gandi from the list because of unpopular decisions such as drastically increasing prices after being acquired by Total Webhosting Solutions.
Edit 2: Do not trust anyone recommending Dynadot under this post. They keep spamming the comments with obviously fake reviews. I've asked the mods to lock new comments.
Top Comment: Dynadot, I have 1k+ domains there
How do you buy a domain?
Main Post:
Hi webhosting,
New to creating things online. Have been only a consumer until now. Jumping into it. This is probably a stupid question for many of you - but how do you buy a domain?
I've looked at lots of online resources, and don't want to buy from a (i dont know...) "shitty?" domain provider (unsure if that even matters, but it seems like each provider has different features for managing different aspects of your domain(s)). I looked at shopify but it seems like you have to signup for a monthly fee. Squarespace, is the same thing? Google domains is no longer (bought by Squarespace). Godaddy seems more expensive.
I just want to buy a domain at a reasonable place, and host it elsewhere (the website I'm building, I'm using wordpress.org ; for hosting another reddit sub recommended buyshared.net did a little research, so figured i'd go with them). And don't want to get sucked into a bunch of extra fees or a sky-high renewal price (which seems more customary at "shittier" providers?? - something about staying away from EIG also?).
Anyway, if anyone hits me back up, I'd be forever grateful. Hopefully it'd feel like watering a little seedling that was just planted, with the hopes that it grows into a big tree that provides shade for any passers-by, and shelter for the birds.
Best wishes,
Pat
Top Comment: Personally I use porkbun.com funny name but so far great company and reasonably priced. Just be sure no matter what you pick do your own digging and reading reviews etc.
Best site to buy a domain name
Main Post:
I'm new to the world of domains. I've bought one once, but I don't know much about configuring and what are the best options of websites for buying them. I'm trying to buy a domain name for a website I'm building, so
What is the best website to buy a domain name? Like godaddy, vercel?
And should I transfer that domain name to cloudflare? How does this work?
Top Comment: Porkbun. Good prices, good site, overall 100% positive experience. I do however, have Cloudflare set as my nameservers so I’m only using Porkbun as my registrar.
a domain name for free? (really free...)
Main Post:
There is a way to get a free domain really for free? And that dont have any thing in the web when accessed?
I try noip, but, if i put "enable mask url" then noip put a horrible frame at the end of the webpage. I dont want that.
So, there is a way to get one? i dont matter if the url is afjhdalsfjhdslajkf.fdsafjañ.tk
or whatever.
Top Comment: At the absolute minimum, domains have an $0.18 USD annual fee required by ICANN (fee goes up from time to time too), so fully free is not possible. Be wary of the cheaper registrars as they make money off of selling you other services.
Don't use Domain.com for your domains
Main Post:
Had a domain there as it seemed legit enough and the first year prices were fine, second year it wanted around 32$ for a renewal (10$ for privacy which should come free) and 50$ renewal on the "free" .online domain they provided which was set automatically, i transferred my domains to NameCheap, they provide the privacy aspect for free and are much cheaper, so far so good.
Yesterday I randomly had a 13$ charge from domain.com after canceling all of my domains around a month ago, it was from the "free" one they provided and had 0 basis lol, I did get a refund after chatting them but wouldn't recommend dealing with them, that's all :)
Top Comment: I use cloudflare, paid like $9 for the year and to renew its $9.77 or something. May just buy it for 5-10 years so I don’t have to deal with prices changing
